macOS still loses to Windows because of Paint
Apr 16, 2021
Think about it. What do you need from a desktop OS out of the box?
- word processing
- media player / organizer
- the most basic image editing ever
macOS beats Windows in every one of these down the list except for the last one. What gives?
Also, there are no good third party apps that meet this need. What’s out here is strictly Adobe competition as opposed to core OS functionality.
What are the possible alternatives?
- “Just use Preview.” Preview is no substitute. You cannot start a blank canvas and draw.
- “Just use Photoshop/GIMP.” Totally different tools. Sure you could do everything that Paint does in Photoshop or GIMP but at the cost of ridiculous learning curve, increased compute power, and unnecessary monetary cost (when it comes to Photoshop anyway).
- “Just use jspaint”. I don’t want to rely on Internet to use Paint. That’s preposterous.
UPDATE 4/29/21: A reader referred me to Painbrush which does meet the needs! Thank you. I still maintain this should be a core part of any OS.
